New Iran Sanctions are in effect. 8 countries are temporarily exempt from only oil purchases:

Exempt: China, India, South Korea, Turkey, Italy, Japan, Greece, Taiwan

Reason for exemption:

1. Oil prices suddenly does not rise
2. Give time to these 8 countries to switch to another producer

These 8 countries already reduced their Iran oil purchases significantly.

700 companies and entities are now included in sanctions. Sanctions are focused on Iran’s Banking, Energy, Shipping and other crucial industries.

Any nation or company which makes business with Iran, will not be making business with USA and will be sanctioned. America is watching Iran and nations and companies who make business with Iran like a hawk. Iran is under close surveillance.

Experts predict, by end of 2019, Iran’s already shrinking and ill economy will shrink by another 15 %.

The goal of these sanctions is for Iran to abandon it’s support for Terrorism. Iran is the number one state sponsor terrorism. It is time for Iran to join the civilized world.

Can Iran survive sanctions?

BBC
http://www.bbc.com/

Image

New tough sanctions targeting Iran's oil sector, imposed by the United States, come into force on Monday.

The Iranian president, Hassan Rouhani, has responded robustly.

"There is no doubt that the United States will not achieve success with this new plot against Iran as they are retreating step by step."

Iran is heavily dependent on its exports of oil, and renewed sanctions, if effective, would hit the economy hard.

The EU has proposed supporting companies trading with Iran despite these new sanctions.

But will these companies risk being hit by secondary sanctions which would limit their own ability to trade with the US?

Why is America imposing sanctions?

Angered at what he describes as a terrible deal, President Donald Trump earlier this year pulled the US out of a multilateral agreement reached with Iran in 2015, under which strict controls were placed on Iran's nuclear program in return for the lifting of a wide range of sanctions.

As a result, sanctions lifted by the US and others in 2016 are now being unilaterally re-imposed by the United States.

Image

But other countries, including those of the European Union, believe Iran is holding to its part of the bargain on the nuclear deal and have made clear their intention not to follow America's lead.

Such is the dominance of the US in global trade, that even the announcement of the renewed sanctions has been enough to trigger a wave of international companies pulling their investments out of Iran, and its crude oil exports have been falling.

How will US sanctions work?

The latest US measures exclude any company that trades with Iran from doing business in the United States.

In addition, under far-reaching secondary sanctions, any US company faces punishment if it does business with a company that does business with Iran.

Sanctions on the banking sector will also be introduced on Monday. In August measures were imposed on a number of industries including trade in gold, precious metals and the automotive sector.

The US has made it clear it wants eventually to cut off Iran's oil trade entirely, but has allowed eight countries to maintain imports as a temporary concession to give them time to reduce imports. US allies such as Italy, India, Japan and South Korea are among the eight, the Associated Press reports.

Image

Getting around sanctions

In order to allow companies to trade with Iran and not face stiff US penalties, the EU plans to implement a payment mechanism - a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) - that will enable these companies to avoid the US financial system.

Like a bank, the SPV, would handle transactions between Iran and companies trading with it, avoiding direct payments into and out of Iran.

So, when Iran exports oil to a country in the EU, the company from the receiving country would pay into the SPV.

Iran can then use the payment as credit to buy goods from other countries in the EU through the SPV.

The EU has also updated a statute - called a blocking statue - that allows EU firms to recover damages from US sanctions.

So, will they hold?

Even with the EU plan in place, the costs of doing any Iran-related business could still be too high for many companies.

For example, even if the shipping operator were to purchase oil through the SPV mechanism, the company insuring the cargo may still face the threat of secondary sanctions and the potential loss of all its business in the United States.

Iran's economy isn't directly reliant on the US financial system, says Richard Nephew, a sanctions expert and senior researcher at Columbia University.

"But the issue is that most of Iran's biggest trading partners do and that affects their readiness to put at risk their access to the United States to do business with Iran."

He says small or medium-sized companies are more likely than large companies to use the SPV.

Another problem is that the product used in the SPV to trade with Iran may also violate secondary sanctions, says Leigh Hansson, head of international trade and national security at Reed Smith. "The transaction itself will be problematic."

Image

Temporary compromise?

The US had insisted on cutting exports to zero but that seems unlikely as it would increase the price of oil, says Scott Lucas, a professor of international politics at Birmingham University.

In addition to the countries allowed to continue buying Iranian oil, the backing of China, Iran's largest trading partner, may also prove critical.

The last time international sanctions were imposed on its oil industry between 2010 and 2016, Iran's exports fell by almost a half.

There's no doubt exports will be affected this time around too, but it's also clear that Iran and its remaining business partners will be working hard to maintain trading links.

"Don't be disillusioned about how painful this will be," says Ellie Geranmayeh, senior policy fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations. But "Iran has weathered multiple rounds of sanctions before."

Iranians will be forced into finding creative ways to sell oil, relying on their years of experience of life under previous sanctions.

And to fill the gap left by lost European investment, Iran will be looking east to forge new links with Russia and China.

Iran oil: US to end sanctions exemptions for major importers

BBC
https://www.bbc.com/

Image
The sanctions on Iran's oil industry have led to a sharp downturn in the country's economy

US President Donald Trump has decided to end exemptions from sanctions for countries still buying oil from Iran.

The White House said waivers for China, India, Japan, South Korea and Turkey would expire in May, after which they could face US sanctions themselves.

This decision is intended to bring Iran's oil exports to zero, denying the government its main source of revenue.

Iran insisted the sanctions were illegal and that it had attached "no value or credibility" to the waivers.

Mr Trump reinstated the sanctions last year after abandoning a landmark 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and six world powers.

Under the accord, Iran agreed to limit its sensitive nuclear activities and allow in international inspectors in return for sanctions relief.

The Trump administration hopes to compel Iran to negotiate a "new deal" that would cover not only its nuclear activities, but also its ballistic missile programme and what officials call its "malign behaviour" across the Middle East.

The sanctions have led to a sharp downturn in Iran's economy, pushing the value of its currency to record lows, quadrupling its annual inflation rate, driving away foreign investors, and triggering protests.

Why aren't the waivers being renewed?

In November, the US reimposed sanctions on Iran's energy, ship building, shipping, and banking sectors, which officials called "the core areas" of its economy.

However, six-month waivers from economic penalties were granted to the eight main buyers of Iranian crude - China, India, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Turkey, Italy and Greece - to give them time to find alternative sources and avoid causing a shock to global oil markets.

Image
Mike Pompeo said the US was "dramatically accelerating" its pressure campaign

Three of the eight buyers - Greece, Italy and Taiwan - have stopped importing Iranian oil. But the others had reportedly asked for their waivers to be extended.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Mr Trump's decision not to renew the waivers showed his administration was "dramatically accelerating our pressure campaign in a calibrated way that meets our national security objectives while maintaining well supplied global oil markets".

"We stand by our allies and partners as they transition away from Iranian crude to other alternatives," he added.

“Saudi Arabia and others in OPEC will more than make up the Oil Flow difference in our now Full Sanctions on Iranian Oil. Iran is being given VERY BAD advice by @JohnKerry and people who helped him lead the U.S. into the very bad Iran Nuclear Deal. Big violation of Logan Act?”
(Donald Trump on Twitter)

"We have had extensive and productive discussions with Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and other major producers to ease this transition and ensure sufficient supply. This, in addition to increasing US production, underscores our confidence that energy markets will remain well supplied."

Oil pressure adds to US friction

By Barbara Plett Usher, BBC state department correspondent

In recent weeks, Japan and South Korea have either halted or sharply decreased Iranian oil imports. Both are heavily dependent on foreign oil and Mr Pompeo said the administration had been trying to find alternatives. But Monday's move could strain relations - already tested over issues of trade and US policy towards North Korea - with these close allies.

It's an even bigger problem for India, which is also under American pressure to cut oil purchases from Venezuela. Iran is one of Delhi's main oil suppliers. But India also has deep cultural and political ties with Tehran, which make it difficult to join US efforts to isolate the Islamic Republic.

China is Iran's other big customer: it has slammed the US decision, saying its trade is perfectly legal, and the US has no jurisdiction to interfere. The question is whether Beijing will try to skirt sanctions through companies not tied to the US financial system.

Turkey was most outspoken in lobbying for a waiver extension. Ankara argues that it badly needs the oil, that as a neighbour it can't cut ties with Iran, and that the pressure campaign won't work anyway.

Saudi Energy Minister Khalid al-Falih said his country would co-ordinate with fellow oil producers to ensure "the global oil market does not go out of balance".

Iranian exports are currently estimated to be below 1 million barrels per day (bpd), compared to more than 2.5 million bpd before Mr Trump abandoned the nuclear deal last May.

What has been the impact on oil prices?

The price of global benchmark Brent crude rose by 3.33% to $74.37 a barrel in trading on Monday - the highest since 1 November.

US oil - known as West Texas Intermediate - was meanwhile up 2.90% at $65.93.

In recent months, the price of oil has risen due to an agreement between the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec) cartel and its allies, including Russia, to cut their output by 1.2 million bpd.

How have the countries affected reacted?

A spokesman for Iran's foreign ministry dismissed Mr Trump's decision, saying the country "did not and does not attach any value or credibility to the waivers".

But Abbas Mousavi added that because of the sanctions' negative effects, Iran was in "constant contact" with its international partners and would act accordingly.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu tweeted that the US move would "not serve regional peace and stability, yet will harm Iranian people".

"Turkey rejects unilateral sanctions and impositions on how to conduct relations with neighbours," he added.

China said earlier that it opposed unilateral US sanctions.

"China-Iran co-operation is open, transparent and in accordance with law. It should be respected," foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told reporters.

Japan's chief cabinet secretary, Yoshihide Suga, was quoted by the Financial Times as saying there should be no "negative effect on the operations of Japanese companies". Its refineries reportedly halted Iranian imports in March.

India's government was studying the implications of the US announcement, the PTI news agency cited sources as saying. The country had reportedly hoped to be allowed to continue to reduce its Iranian oil imports gradually.

South Korea stopped buying Iranian oil for four months in response, but resumed in January. In March, it imported 284,600 bpd.

US Aircraft Career with Bombing Group Jets to Strait of Hormoz

Rendezvous at Strait of Hormoz

Mullahs the same as Congressional Democrats bark a lot but they have no power or backbone. They are feeling the intense pressure of sanctions and they can’t sell oil, so they bark a lot.

Mullahs declare US military as a terrorist group and agitate Israel by ordering Hamas to rocket South Israel. These are the sad attempts to gain attention but nothing they will do will affect US Sanctions.

Mullahs threatened to close the straight of Hormoz but they know that this would bring war and possible destruction of IRI. They have no choice but to bark like a rabid dog.

End of IRI will come soon or late

Either People will rise up because of inflation, unemployment and hunger.

Or War with US will hit IRI.

Or Sanctions will bankrupt IRI.

Anyway, you analyze it, death of IRI is approaching and is in the horizon. Soon or late IRI, IRGC and Mullahs will become a thing of a past.

IRI Lobby in US better think of their future!

US deploys strike group to send 'clear and unmistakable' message to Iran

The U.S. is sending the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group and a bomber task force to the Middle East, National Security Adviser John Bolton announces; Lucas Tomlinson has the latest from the Pentagon.

The U.S. is sending the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group and a bomber task force to the Middle East in order "to send a clear and unmistakable message to the Iranian regime," National Security Adviser John Bolton announced Sunday night.

Bolton said the deployment was in response to "a number of troubling and escalatory indications and warnings" on the part of Tehran, but did not elaborate. Such deployments are rarely announced in advance.

"Any attack on United States interests or on those of our allies will be met with unrelenting force," Bolton said. "The United States is not seeking war with the Iranian regime, but we are fully prepared to respond to any attack, whether by proxy, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or regular Iranian forces."

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who is scheduled to meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Finland on Monday, told reporters the deployment is “something we’ve been working on for a little while” and “we will hold the Iranians accountable for attacks on American interests. If these actions take place, if they do by some third-party proxy, a militia group, Hezbollah, we will hold the Iranian leadership directly accountable for that.”

The strike group, which includes the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, the guided missile cruiser USS Leyte Gulf and destroyers from Destroyer Squadron 2, departed Naval Station Norfolk on April 1 for what the Navy described as a "regularly scheduled deployment." The strike force is under the command of Rear Adm. John Wade.

The USS John Stennis aircraft carrier strike group was in the Persian Gulf as recently as late March. The Stennis and USS Abraham Lincoln joined forces in the Mediterranean Sea in recent days.

The deployment comes less than a month after the Trump administration designated Iran's elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) a terrorist organization. In late March, the Air Force pulled its bombers from Qatar, one of the rare times since 2001 no bombers were deployed to the Middle East.

Last month, the Air Force deployed a task force of F-35 stealth fighter jets for the first time to the Middle East. Last week, some of the advanced jets carried out their first air strikes against ISIS, the Air Force said.

Earlier Sunday, Axios reported that the Trump administration was preparing to announce a new set of sanctions against Iran on Wednesday, one year after the U.S. pulled out from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. The Wall Street Journal reported last week that the White House was considering sanctions targeting petrochemical and consumer goods sales by Iran, but Axios reported Sunday that the sanctions to be announced this week would target a different sector of the rogue nation's economy.

The U.S. Navy says there have been zero cases of “unsafe” interactions between its warships and aircraft and Iranian forces this year as well as last year.

The deployment also comes amid the bloodiest fighting in five years between Israel and Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip.

Last Friday, two Israeli soldiers were wounded by snipers from the Iran-backed militant group Islamic Jihad. Late Saturday, the Israeli military announced that an airstrike had killed Hamas commander Hamed al-Khoudary, a money changer whom Israel said was a key player in transferring Iranian funds to the militant group.

US sends aircraft carrier and bomber task force to 'warn Iran'

BBC
https://www.bbc.com/

Image
A file photo from 2004 of the USS Abraham Lincoln, which is currently on its way to Iran

The US has deployed an aircraft carrier to the Middle East to send a "clear and unmistakable message" to Iran.

National Security Adviser John Bolton said the administration was acting "in response to a number of troubling and escalatory indications and warnings".

The deployment of the warship was based on claims of a possible attack on US forces stationed in the region, unnamed US officials are quoted as saying.

Mr. Bolton added that they would counter any attack with "unrelenting force".

In a statement, Mr. Bolton said: "The United States is deploying the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group and a bomber task force to the US Central Command region to send a clear and unmistakable message to the Iranian regime that any attack on United States interests or on those of our allies will be met with unrelenting force."

Image
John Bolton said the US was "not seeking war" with Iran

He added: "The United States is not seeking war with the Iranian regime. But we are fully prepared to respond to any attack, whether by proxy, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps or regular Iranian forces."

The ship was already in Europe for war games with US allies that have been taking place since the end of April.

So far there is little detail from the Americans of the alleged Iranian actions that have prompted this warning nor of the specific US deployments under way.

It is not unusual for an aircraft carrier and its battle group to be sent to the Gulf. Reinforcing US land-based air assets in the region, albeit temporarily, is less routine.

Washington has itself been turning up the pressure on Iran over recent months; designating the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps a terrorist entity; toughening up oil sanctions and so on.

But the Trump administration's goal is unclear. Its spokesmen insist that they do not want war with Iran but they can also barely hide their enthusiasm for regime change in Tehran.

So, is this US move an attempt to guarantee the existing, uneasy status quo? Or is it an attempt to turn the screw even tighter?

Many critics of the administration fear a developing drumbeat towards a conflict which, they fear, could erupt either by accident or by design.

The deployment comes amid growing tensions between the US and Iran.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told reporters on a trip to Europe: "It is absolutely the case that we have seen escalatory actions from the Iranians and it is equally the case that we will hold the Iranians accountable for attacks on American interests."

He did not explain what he meant by "escalatory actions", however he added: "We have good reason to want to communicate clearly about how the Iranians should understand how we will respond to actions they may take."

Last year President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from a landmark nuclear deal the US and other nations had agreed with Iran in 2015.

Under the accord, Iran had agreed to limit its sensitive nuclear activities and allow in international inspectors in return for sanctions relief.

And last month the White House said it would end exemptions from sanctions for five countries - China, India, Japan, South Korea and Turkey - that were still buying Iranian oil.

At the same time the US also blacklisted Iran's elite Revolutionary Guard Corps, designating it as a foreign terrorist group.

The Trump administration hopes to compel Iran to negotiate a "new deal" that would cover not only its nuclear activities, but also its ballistic missile programme and what officials call its "malign behaviour" across the Middle East.

The sanctions have led to a sharp downturn in Iran's economy, pushing the value of its currency to record lows, driving away foreign investors, and triggering protests.

Iran has repeatedly threatened to retaliate to the US measures by blocking the Strait of Hormuz - though which about a fifth of all oil consumed globally pass.

The Maximum US Pressure on the Foreign Puppet Akhonds' Illegitimate Regime, Occupying Iran Today, to be successful should be accompanied with another maximum pressure to remove the yoke of UK, and EU old neocolonial powers from the shoulders of Iranian people.

That is, the removal of the clandestine supports, by propaganda and other political means, of these neocolonial foreign powers, in particular the UK, for their assets in Iran, the medieval Akhonds and their mafia terrorist regime.

It is called the EU and UK Greed

EU, to be precise UK, France and Germany are the reasons for IRI still to be alive and kicking. Dealing with Mullahs has been good to EU. Iranian people always had a dislike for Russian and British Governments but they love America.

Ahreeman once said:

“Iran is the only country in Middle East where people love America but the government hastes America. Mostly everywhere else, people hate America but governments love America.”

I say:

Because the governments are in US pocket and on the payroll (grants).

The British have a history of animosity and ill will to colonize Iran but they never could. Iranians will always mistrust the British.

While Mullahs are in control, business will be very profitable for the British. Mullahs and British are getting very rich but the Iranian people are getting very poor.

Once Mullahs will be replaced with a Nationalist government, business will become profitable and fair for both Iranian and the British governments but most important, Iranian people will become rich.

For centuries, the British government has proven that they are no friend of Iran.

How Neocolonialist Powers, such as U.K. and some EU countries, manage to reach their neocolonial goals in this 21st Century, and remotely control a third world country such as Iran?

Their plan is relatively simple, it includes the following; Clandestinely, use their Secret-agents, and Secret Services to identify and fully support a puppet Dictator, such as Akhond Ali Khamenei, (and Akhond Khomeini the Accursed, before him) and give him the name Supreme Leader of the country. Take all the pillars of political power of the country; (i.e.; Executive, Legislative, Judiciary, Media Outlets; TVs, Internet, Radios, and all Newspapers of the country) under the control of their puppet Dictator, and out of control of the people of the country.

The neocolonial power favor a system, or regime, that can put all of these pillars of power, under the full control of their puppet dictator, Akhond Ali Khamenei, anyone that opposes this scheme should be hanged.

With this Neocolonial Scheme in place, they can achieve full control over the country remotely, through their puppet Supreme Leader, and their Secret Service Agents, and links with the Dictator to give him daily orders 24 hours, every day of the week.

Uninformed people of Iran think, how clever the dictator is, that knows everything! Because these people don't know that every bit of information comes to the puppet Dictator through these foreign Secret Agents planted in Dictator's office.

As applied to Iran today, this scheme makes the people of Iran completely powerless to change anything, having no means of control over their own country, to be able to initiate any change in the country with their own hands.

So the country is at the mercy of the Neocolonial foreign powers, e.g. UK, EU, with their goals of plundering Iran natural resources, such as Crude Oil, and their strategic goal of dividing the country in the future.

We are a super power in middle east and a power house in Asia. Under so much pressure from US, we are still relatively doing good. Maybe your country Israel is this third world but we’re not.

Come to agreement with the fact of we won and you lost. We are here and you got kicked out. We come and go to US and EU but you can’t come back to Iran. You’re a loser Jew and we are winners.

Turn off your caps, no matter how large your font, no one reads your gibberish writing. I went to school in US but I don’t live in US. I live in Iran and EU but write better English than you. What the heck are you trying to write? All of your writing is because your butt is burning (koon soozi az enghelab). Keep crying Haji Joohoodeh. We rule Iran and kicked your ass out. This time the attack was via sea mines. This incident was a clear insult to the Prime Minister Shinzo Abe who was in Tehran trying to smooth issues between US and IRI. Prime Minister tried his last attempt and Khamenei rejected, in addition ordered a terror attack on the ships and sailors of Japan. US Navy was called upon rescue.

If Khamenei assumes that Trump is bluffing, he got another thing coming to him! Trump does not want war but when IRI openly commits enriching, building nukes and doing random acts of terror around the Persian Gulf and the region, then it really leaves no choice for Trump to react.

If Mullahs and IRGC desire to dance then they will dance with the US Navy which is dancing with the Death. No terror attacks by Iran and its proxies will lift the sanctions or seize the Maximum Pressure Campaign.

Unfortunately, the greed of the EU and UK to trade with IRI is still to some point energizing the IRI economy but not even EU can exempt itself from US Sanctions on IRI. The EU is a hope for Iran to somehow make a deal on the nuclear issue but the only deal in the horizon is Trump’s Doctrine which dictates IRI to shape up or ship out.

The only factor which will ease the pressure is for IRI to abandon Nuclear Program to build Nukes and abandon funding global Islamic Terrorism. If IRI continues this path, it will surely collapse.

From IRI point of view, how can the regime abandon nukes and terrorism, when its fundamental doctrine and survival lies within these two factors?

Any which way you look at the case, you will notice 3 scenarios:

A. IRI Expansionist and Terrorist Desires in the Middle East and the World will soon or late start a war with US which will end by collapse of the IRI Regime.

B. Collapse of the IRI Economy will soon or late cause an uprising and nationwide protests which will eventually cause the collapse of the regime.

C. Internal conflicts of the regime between its various fractions of so-called reformist, moderate and fundamentalists in addition with the terrible economy, inflation, unemployment and plunder of the national budget by funding and supporting the global Islamic Terrorism will break down the regime from within and prepares the collapse of the regime.

War, Revolution or Disintegration will soon or late destroy IRI.

‘Message to America’: Iran Shoots Down U.S. ‘Spy Drone’

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said Thursday it had shot down a U.S. “spy drone” over its territory, sending “a clear message” to America in doing so.

The IRGC released a statement to the IRNA domestic newsagency, saying:

“At the early hours of Thursday, the IRGC air force shot down an American spy drone, identified as RQ-4 Global Hawk that had violated Iranian airspace in the Kuh Mubarak region located at Hormozgan province, south of the country.”

Tehran, June 20, IRNA – The Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) declared on Thursday that it has shot down a US spy drone.

Northrop Grumman, manufacturer of the RQ-4 Global Hawk, describes the aircraft as a “premier provider of persistent intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance information.”

The commander of the IRGC says the drone’s destruction has sent “a clear message” to America.

Gen. Hossein Salami also cautioned Iran does “not have any intention for war with any country, but we are ready for war.”

His speech was carried live on Iranian state television shortly after U.S. and Iranian officials acknowledged the shooting down of the drone.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said U.S. President Donald Trump had been “briefed on the reports of a missile strike in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.”

“We are closely monitoring the situation and continuing to consult with our partners and allies,” Sanders said.

U.S. officials told the Associated Press the downing happened over international airspace in the Strait of Hormuz and not Iranian airspace as claimed by Tehran.

The drone attack came just 48-hours after the Pentagon released new images which officials said offered more evidence operatives from the IRGC were responsible for last week’s attacks on oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman.

Iran: New US sanctions target Supreme Leader Khamenei

BBC
https://www.bbc.com/

US President Donald Trump has said he is imposing hard-hitting new sanctions on Iran, including on the office of the country's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Mr Trump said the additional sanctions were in response to the shooting down of a US drone and "many other things".

Ayatollah Khamenei, Iran's highest authority, was singled out because he was "ultimately responsible for the hostile conduct of the regime".

Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif said the Americans "despise diplomacy".

In a tweet sent after the announcement, Mr Zarif also accused the Trump administration of having a "thirst for war".

Tensions between the two countries have been escalating in recent weeks.

However, US Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said Mr Trump's executive order - which would lock up "billions" of dollars in Iranian assets - was in the works before Tehran shot down an unmanned US drone in the Gulf last week.

Who is affected?

The US Treasury department said eight senior Iranian commanders who "sit atop a bureaucracy that supervises the IRGC's [the elite Islamic Revolution Guard Corps] malicious regional activities", were being targeted.

It added that Mr Trump's executive order would also "deny Iran's leadership access to financial resources and authorises the targeting of persons appointed to certain official or other positions by the Supreme Leader or the Supreme Leader's Office", as well as foreign financial institutions which help them conduct transitions.

The US has alleged Ayatollah Khamenei has vast wealth which helps funds the IRCG. In a 2018 op-ed, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo suggested his personal wealth was as much as $95bn (£75bn) which was "used as a slush fund for the IRGC".

Sanctions will also be imposed on Mr Zarif later this week, according to Mr Mnuchin.

Why is the US imposing sanctions now?

Back in May 2018, the White House reinstated all sanctions removed under a 2015 nuclear deal made with world powers which sought to prevent Iran creating its own nuclear weapon.

Relations between the two nations continued to sour, and in May - a year after Mr Trump abandoned the nuclear deal - the US stepped up pressure on Iran by ending exemptions from secondary sanctions for countries still buying Iranian oil.

This was followed by a series of attacks on tankers in the Gulf, which the White House said Iran was behind. Tehran has denied all allegations.

Iranian officials then announced the country was set to breach the limit on its stockpile of enriched uranium that was set under the 2015 deal on 27 June.

Days later, the drone was shot down over what the US says was international waters, but Iran says was its territory.

How have earlier US sanctions hit Iran?

The sanctions - particularly those imposed on the energy, shipping and financial sectors - caused foreign investment to dry up and hit oil exports.

They bar US companies from trading with Iran, but also with foreign firms or countries that are dealing with Iran.

This has led to shortages of imported goods and products that are made with raw materials from abroad, most notably babies' nappies.

The plunging value of the national currency, the rial, has also affected the cost of locally produced staples such as meat and eggs, which have soared in price.

Iran has responded to the economic pressure by saying it planned to violate some of the nuclear deal's commitments. It has also accused European countries of failing to live up to their promises of protecting Iran's economy from US sanctions.

What happened to the US drone?

Iran's IRGC said the drone's downing was a "clear message" to the US that Iran's borders were "our red line".

But US military officials maintain the drone was in international airspace over the Strait of Hormuz at the time.

Amir Ali Hajizadeh, a high-ranking officer in the IRGC, said another military aircraft, carrying 35 passengers, had been flying close to the drone. "We could have shot down that one too, but we did not," he said.

Trump’s New Sanctions On Iran Target Supreme Leader Khamenei

RFE
https://www.rferl.org/Iran

U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing "hard-hitting" sanctions on Iran, including on the office of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as tensions between the two nations heat up.

The sanctions will deny Iran’s leader and those close to him “access to key financial resources and support," Trump said as he signed the document in the Oval Office on June 24.

Trump said he will “continue to increase pressure” on Iran until the regime ends its “dangerous activities and its aspirations,” including its pursuit of nuclear weapons, development of ballistic missiles, and support of terrorism.

However, he pointed out that the United States doesn’t “ask for conflict” and added that depending on Iran's response the sanctions could end tomorrow -- or it "can also be years from now."

The new round of sanctions also includes eight members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps. It will lock up billions of dollars in Iranian assets, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said.

Mnuchin added Trump has authorized him to impose sanctions on Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif this week.

Shortly after the new sanctions were announced in Washington, Zarif said on Twitter that some U.S. politicians “despise diplomacy.” Zarif accused the Trump administration of having a “thirst for war.”

Javad Zarif:

.@realDonaldTrump is 100% right that the US military has no business in the Persian Gulf. Removal of its forces is fully in line with interests of US and the world. But it's now clear that the #B_Team is not concerned with US interests—they despise diplomacy, and thirst for war.

Iranian hard-line media said the new sanctions are based on “fabricated” accusations.

The sanctions come as tensions between Iran and the United States escalate, raising concerns the U.S. could pursue military action against the Islamic regime.

Gulf Tensions

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met June 24 with leaders in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates as he seeks to build a coalition against Tehran.

The U.S. accused Iran of sabotaging two oil tankers earlier this month in the Gulf of Omen, which Tehran denies.

Last week, Iran shot down a U.S. military drone it said was flying over its territory. The United States has said the drone was in international skies.

Trump said on June 21 that he came within minutes of executing strikes against Iran in retaliation for the downing of the drone. He left open the question of a military response.

“Who knows what is going to happen? I can only tell you we cannot ever let Iran have a nuclear weapon,” said Trump, adding he is open to talks with the country’s leaders.

Trump made taking a tough stance toward Iran and its nuclear program a key element of his 2016 campaign and has followed through on that promise since coming to power.

Last year, he withdrew the United States from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal that sought to curb the country’s nuclear program in exchange for an easing of sanctions.

Former U.S. officials and allies called Trump’s action's a mistake.

Trump called the agreement “short-sighted” and claimed that under its terms Iran would have been able to develop nuclear weapons in a few years.

“The [2015] agreement that was signed was a disaster. It was not doing what it was supposed to do,” he said June 24.

The president has imposed sanctions on more than 900 Iranian individuals and companies since 2018, squeezing the oil-producing nation financially.

Earlier this month, his administration imposed sanctions on Persian Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company, the country’s largest petrochemical company and one of its biggest exporters.

IRGC Qods Force Drafting African Militia to Hit US Forces

General Qassem Soleimani commander of Qods Force is drafting, training and setting Terrorist Cells from African Islamist Militia around Africa to attack US and Allies Forces. New Islamist Militia are mostly from:

Sudan, Chad, Ghana, Niger, Gambia and the Central African Republic.

In plans are sabotage, assassinations, sneak attack explosions, terror missions and guerilla operations. Qods Force are the elite forces of IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corp). Qods Force will be funding, training and commanding these African Militias.

Iran is setting up a network of terror cells in Africa to attack US and other Western targets in retaliation for Washington’s decision to impose sanctions against Tehran, according to Western security officials.

The new terror network has been established on the orders of Qassem Soleimani, the head of the Quds Force, the elite section of Iran’s Republican Guard Corps that has responsibility for overseas operations.

The aim of the new terror cell is to target US and other Western military bases on the continent, as well as embassies and officials.

The Iranian cells are said to be active in a number of African countries including Sudan, Chad, Ghana, Niger, Gambia and the Central African Republic.

Image

“Iran is setting up a new terrorist infrastructure in Africa with the aim of attacking Western targets,” a senior Western security source told The Daily Telegraph. “It is all part of Tehran’s attempts to expand its terrorist operations across the globe.”

Intelligence officials say Iran has been working on the new terror network for the past three years since signing the nuclear deal on freezing its uranium enrichment activities with the US and other major world powers in 2015.

The operation is being organized by Unit 400, a highly specialized section of the Quds Force which is run by Hamed Abdollahi, a veteran Republican Guard officers who was designated by the US as supporting terrorist activity in 2012.

Image

The African cell is said to be run by Ali Parhoon, another senior Iranian officer in Unit 400. Details of the terror cell’s existence were uncovered following a series of arrests in Chad in April.

Investigators found that Iran was behind the recruitment and training of men between the ages of 25-35 with the aim of committing terror attacks against Western targets on the continent.

There are estimated to be around 300 militants who have been recruited by the Revolutionary Guard and have undergone rigorous training at Iranian-run training camps in Syria and Iraq.

The last batch of recruits were trained at an Iranian base in the southern Iraqi city of Najaf. Iran’s attempts to establish a new terror operation in Africa follow revelations in The Telegraph earlier this month that British security officials caught terrorists linked to Iran stockpiling tonnes of explosives on the outskirts of London.

The British authorities believe this cell was also set up in 2015 after Iran signed the nuclear deal.

US diplomatic officials say a warning has been circulated to American diplomatic and military missions in the countries where Iranian militants are said to be operating, as well as missions of other Western countries, including Britain, France and Italy.

The revelation that Iran is setting up a new terror network in Africa comes at a time when Tehran has been accused of stoking tensions in the Gulf after Revolutionary Guard commanders confirmed that they were responsible for shooting down a US military drone operating close to the Strait of Hormuz.

In addition, Iran has been blamed for carrying out attacks on a number of oil tankers operating in the Gulf that were damaged by mines.

Hassan Rouhani
Cleric, diplomat, lawyer and, since 2013, president of Iran, Mr Rouhani is a veteran of the 1979 revolution and a man very much of the Islamic Republic’s ruling establishment. These days he is considered leader of the moderate camp, and was elected twice on promises to end diplomatic isolation and restart the economy.

His reputation suffered after the nuclear deal brought only moderate economic benefits and he failed to challenge hardliners over a crackdown on women protesting Iran’s compulsory hijab law.

Javad Zarif
Mr Rouhani’s foreign minister champions “diplomacy with a smile”. His urbane charm and fluent English were key in achieving the 2015 deal.

A long career involving several overseas postings makes him an effective diplomat, but he is a divisive figure at home, where he has faced abuse and physical threats over the nuclear deal. Hardliners have called him a coward for studying in the United States in the 1980s instead of fighting in the war with Iraq.
