Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s website posted photographs of a hospital visit by President Hassan Rouhani, one of many dignitaries to see the ayatollah.

TEHRAN — Iran’s highest leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, underwent an operation on his prostate on Monday, according to state-run news media and a posting on his website. None specified whether the ayatollah, 75, has prostate cancer.

Rumors have circulated for more than 15 years that Ayatollah Khamenei has prostate cancer, with the leader at times disappearing from the public eye for weeks. But Monday was the first time that state news media widely announced that he was undergoing treatment related to his prostate, apparently to help quell more rumors and speculation.

In what his doctors described as a “routine operation,” Ayatollah Khamenei, one of the most influential clerics in the Muslim world, received local anesthetics, and he will convalesce in Baghiatallah Hospital here for three to five days. State television showed an interview in which he announced that he was about to undergo surgery.
“Of course, there is no need to worry about it,” Ayatollah Khamenei said. “It does not mean that people should not pray. God willing, it should not be a matter of worry. It is an ordinary and normal operation.”

His website, Khamenei.ir, showed photographs of the leader, including one of him in his hospital bed as he was visited by President Hassan Rouhani.

The operation was a huge success, said the head of the medical team, Dr. Alireza Marandi, who is also a member of Iran’s Parliament.

“Normally, patients need to rest for about three, four or five days after this kind of a surgery,” Dr. Marandi said on state television. “Probably, he will need the same period of time to rest after the surgery.” He suggested that the ayatollah take it easy for a few weeks and “cancel some of his work temporarily.”

Two police cars were seen outside the hospital on Monday. Some parking spots were freed up for a caravan of dignitaries coming to see the leader.

Among Iran’s leaders, Ayatollah Khamenei is relatively young. Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, a former president who was among the first to visit the leader, turned 80 just two weeks ago. Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati, the leader of the 12-person Guardian Council, a powerful oversight body, is 87.

Mr. Rouhani, 65, initially had decided to cancel a state visit to Kazakhstan, but made the trip anyway upon the insistence of Ayatollah Khamenei, state news media said.

“Thank God, he is very well, and people should not be worried,” the president told state television. “I believe that along with prayer all must be thankful for his existence and, thank God, his health.”

It was impossible to know from the few details disclosed whether Ayatollah Khamenei’s prostate had been removed. But urological oncology experts outside Iran said the hospitalization and multiday convalescence suggested that doctors may have performed such a procedure.

“Presumably, if he’s having his prostate removed, he has early-stage disease, and it’s likely to be curable,” said Dr. Eric A. Klein, chairman of the Glickman Urological and Kidney Institute and a staff member of the Taussig Cancer Institute at the Cleveland Clinic.

Ayatollah Khamenei started out as a dissident cleric under the rule of Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi and became a leading member of the small coterie of clerics that led the Islamic Revolution that ousted the shah and broke relations with the United States. His tenure has been shaped partly by a strong anti-American animosity.

Near the end of eight years as president, Ayatollah Khamenei became supreme leader in 1989 after the founder of the Islamic republic, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, died. He is appointed for life. Upon his death, the 86-member Assembly of Experts will decide on his successor.

Ayatollah Khamenei has the final say over the most important issues in Iran, including its current negotiations aimed at reaching an agreement with the United States and other world powers on its nuclear energy program.

In this picture released by the official website of the office of the Iranian supreme leader, President Hassan Rouhani kisses the forehead of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei after his surgery at a hospital in Tehran, Iran, Monday, Sept. 8

Iran's supreme leader underwent prostate surgery on Monday and was recovering at a government hospital in Tehran, state media said in a rare report on the state of health of the country's top cleric.

The 75-year-old Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has final say on all state matters and has been Iran's top leader since 1989, was reported to be in "good condition" and his doctors said he was resting after the surgery.

President Hassan Rouhani visited the supreme leader in hospital after the procedure and later released a statement saying that Khamenei's condition is "very good and hence, the people should not be worried."

Rouhani said he had offered to cancel his attendance at a regional summit in Tajikistan but that Khamenei had convinced him to proceed with the planned trip. Rouhani left later in the day on a five-day trip there and to Kazakhstan.

The official IRNA news agency described the operation as "routine" and said it was successful, without giving details on what had prompted it or the underlying medical condition.

Head of Khamenei's medical team, Dr. Ali Reza Marandi, told state TV that the procedure took less than half an hour and was performed under local anesthesia. He said Khamenei will need three to four days of rest.

Mohammad Mohammadi Golpayegani, the head of Khamenei's office, told IRNA that the supreme leader will leave hospital for home after five or six days.

Earlier in the day, state TV aired a brief footage of Khamenei before the surgery in which he asked people to pray for him.

Khamenei was a close ally of the late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini who led the 1979 Islamic Revolution and was later Iran's supreme leader until his death in 1989. He served as Iran's president for eight years before becoming the supreme leader in 1989 and has proved a powerful defender of the clerical rule established by his predecessor.

Khamenei has kept Iran on a firmly anti-U.S. path, pushing ahead with its nuclear ambitions despite international pressure and sanctions. At the same time, Iran sought to extend its influence in the Middle East through its ally Syria and Islamic militant groups despite attempt by U.S.-backed Arab governments to contain Iran.

In 2009, Khamenei thwarted the movement in support of a reformist presidential candidate, Mir Hossein Mousavi, and when hundreds of thousands rose up around the country marching in the streets, some overtly denouncing him, he stepped forward to crush the protests.

Under the Iranian system, the president and members of parliament are elected in nationwide balloting but an undisputed clerical hierarchy controls councils that approve legislation and candidates running for office. The clerics are also in charge of the powerful judiciary and are tightly linked to the paramilitary Revolutionary Guard force.
Khamenei has seen four presidents take office during his leadership. Hard-line former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who once was seen as being firmly within the theocracy's fold, later rebelled and challenged Khamenei's authority.

More recently, Khamenei has lent support to the talks between Iran and the six world powers on Tehran's controversial nuclear program and the breakthrough interim agreement those talks produced last November.
But he has also expressed doubts the talks will lead anywhere. Last month, Khamenei said the United States had only grown more hostile to Iran since the talks began, and that there was no point in holding direct negotiations with Washington.

The U.N.'s nuclear agency is trying to investigate allegations that Iran secretly worked on nuclear weapons — something Tehran denies, insisting its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only, such as power generation and cancer treatment.

Khamenei has backed the reformist Rouhani, who took office in August 2013, and his efforts to stabilize the national currency and halt inflation. But the government has a long way to go to deliver on promises of economic growth.

Khamenei earlier this year said the priority for Iranians is to make their economy immune to outside pressures. He has called U.N. and Western sanctions imposed over Iran's nuclear program a "full-fledged economic war" on his country and has ordered the government to create an "economy of resistance" to counter the measures.
The project involves efforts to diversify Iran's exports, reduce dependence on sales of raw materials and promote knowledge-based high-tech industries.

"If a nation is not strong, the world's extortionists will extort from it, insult it and if they can, they will trample on it," Khamenei said in March, in his annual speech for the Persian New Year, Nowruz. "If a nation doesn't become strong, it will be bullied by others."

Most Iranian state TV and radio channels kept broadcasting their regular programs on Monday, an indication that the situation was business as usual.

Khamenei was once hospitalized in 1981 after a failed assassination attempt against him.

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei went under surgery at a Tehran hospital on Monday morning.

The Iranian Supreme Leader went under a prostate surgery at a public hospital in Tehran on Monday morning.
"I have a surgery and I am now leaving for the hospital," the Supreme Leader said speaking to a reporter earlier this morning.

"There is no reason to worry; this, of course, does not mean that I don't need people's prayers, but God willing, there is no point to worry as it is a normal operation," he added.

"God willing everything will go on well," Ayatollah Khamenei added.

Later reports coming from the hospital said that the surgery has just ended successfully.

Iran's President Hassan Rouhani visited Ayatollah Khamenei in hospital after the surgery

Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is recovering from prostate surgery, state media say.
The operation, which took place on Monday at a government hospital in the capital, Tehran, was said to be "routine".

An announcement about the surgery ahead of the procedure was unprecedented, as the Ayatollah's health is traditionally a confidential subject.

The 75-year-old cleric has led Iran since 1989 and is its top authority.

Earlier on Monday, Ayatollah Khamenei was seen on Iranian state television asking people to pray for him, but said there was "no room for concern".

Ayatollah Khamenei's health has always been a secret topic in Iran, like other aspects of his personal life, says BBC Persian's Bozorgmehr Sharafedin.

In January 2007 a rumour of the Ayatollah's death spread in Iran and the world, simply because he did not announce he had a bad case of flu and could not attend public ceremonies, our reporter says.

The Ayatollah's appearance on TV before the surgery and announcement of the news by himself is a clear change of approach. Either he knows that the critical situation in Iran and the region cannot bear another rumour of his death, or he has decided to be more open about his personal life, our reporter adds.

In 1989, Ayatollah Khamenei succeeded the first Supreme Leader and founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ayatollah Khomeini, following Khomeini's death.

As the country's highest authority, Ayatollah Khamenei's power outranks all politicians, including the country's President Hassan Rouhani.
